CREATING A STAR ENVIRONMENT

At Re Jala Peo, we believe that children who connect with nature today will protect it tomorrow. Through our Junior Ranger Botswana program, students are introduced to conservation topics using the Head, Heart, and Hand principle; combining knowledge, emotional connection, and hands-on activities in nature.
The goal is to raise awareness, promote a sense of responsibility, and inspire children to care for themselves, their communities, and the natural world around them.
“You only love what you know, and you only protect what you love.”
Kids to the Bush Camps
Our Kids to the Bush Camps give students the rare opportunity to experience Botswana’s pristine wilderness. Since December 2024, we partner with Okavango Expeditions, DWNP, Kwalate Safaris, and other local supporters to organize an unforgettable series of bush camps. Camps include game drives, campfire lessons, nature walks, and reflection sessions. Children learn directly from professional safari guides, building respect and love for their environment.
Environmental education in action
The experience extends beyond the bush. In our partner schools, students engage in a variety of conservation and life skills activities:
School Garden Project
Together with local schools, we manage school gardens that teach children how to grow organic vegetables in sustainable ways. The produce supports school meals, while any surplus can be sold as part of the student savings and entrepreneurship projects.
Tree Planting Activities
Planting trees is a powerful, hands-on way to care for the local landscape. Students participate in regular tree planting campaigns, helping to green their schoolyards and nearby communities.
Happy Green Botswana & Waste Management
Through the Happy Green Botswana method, club members learn how personal action contributes to a cleaner and healthier environment.
-
Litter picking activities promote responsibility and pride in one’s surroundings.
-
Creative reuse is encouraged; turning waste into value through upcycling and art.
Environmental Awareness Conference
We organize our Environmental Awareness Conference each year to bring together club members from all partner schools, along with teachers, parents, environmental advocates, and special guests.
In preparation, students apply the entrepreneurial skills they have gained through the Aflatoun program like planning, teamwork, creativity, and confidence to shape meaningful performances. Through speeches, dance, drama, poetry, and monologues, they express what they’ve learned about protecting endangered species.
The event not only raises awareness but also empowers young people to take action, highlighting the growing environmental consciousness among Botswana’s youth.
Creative & market-based learning
Christmas markets
To teach the value of entrepreneurship and sustainability, club members create products made from waste materials. Selected members from each school showcase and sell their handmade items at Christmas markets in Maun.
Handmade Christmas Cards
As part of our tradition, Re Jala Peo sends Christmas cards or small gifts to thank our sponsors, donors, headmasters, and coordinators.
Together, these activities create meaningful change; developing confident, conscious young leaders who are ready to care for themselves, each other, and the future of Botswana.
