Empowering women through craft: Nina Safari Tales project brings hope to Maun

The Nina Safari Tales Project, launched by Re Jala Peo in cooperation with Nancy of Botswana Specialist, is helping women that took part in our women empowerment programs in Maun and nearby villages build brighter futures through creativity and skill-building.

The project started in Thito Ward, teaching women to crochet safari animals using high quality materials. Each finished animal earns them BWP 300, offering a much-needed income boost compared to the monthly fee of BWP 817 provided by government relief programs. “This project is about more than making crafts. It’s about confidence, creativity, and community,” said Nami, our community mobilizer.

Women also bake stroopwafels, a popular Dutch treat and sell them locally for extra income. Others sew fabric pouches for the crocheted animals, each featuring a logo and a personal story card from the makers.

After training 20 women in the pilot phase, Re Jala Peo plans to expand the project across the Okavango Delta, helping more women discover their talents and earn a sustainable living. “Many women are now dreaming bigger,” said Nami. “They are not just surviving, they are thriving.”
