Our Women Empowerment Centre in Borolong Ward, Maun, has officially opened

Last Saturday, 17 January 2026, our team proudly and gratefully celebrated the official opening of the Women Empowerment Centre in Borolong Ward. Together with the women from the crocheting project of our friend Nancy, Nina Safari Tales, partners, friends and community members, this day marked an important milestone in strengthening women and their craftsmanship.

Located in the Borolong neighbourhood, the centre is a place where women come together to work, learn and support one another. Crocheters, seamstresses and bakers from Thito Ward and Tsutsubega work side by side on their handmade products, building confidence, independence and future opportunities together. The centre also offers a welcoming meeting place for tourists, who can meet the women, purchase their handmade products and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with homemade treats, providing the women with additional income.

The Women Empowerment Centre was generously made available by Carolin Müller. With great care and creativity, the space was transformed into a warm and welcoming workspace by four students from HAN University of Applied Sciences in Nijmegen, Netherlands: Jelke, Joren, Kian and Anouk. Their dedication has helped create a place that truly reflects collaboration, pride and opportunity.

During the opening, visitors met the inspiring women behind Project Nina and celebrated everything that has already been achieved. The centre was officially opened by Mma Kushonya, a well-known basket weaver with a deep commitment to women’s empowerment. The name ‘Mosadi Thari’, meaning women carry the nation and also the Setswana word for the cloth women use to carry their children, was unveiled by the students. The atmosphere was filled with energy, connection and pride, underlining the importance of this centre for the community. Women from Tsutsubega sang and danced for the guests, soon joined enthusiastically by the other women.

From Monday 26 January, the Women Empowerment Centre will be open on weekdays from 9:00 to 12:00, and on weekends by appointment. Visitors are warmly invited to stop by, enjoy homemade refreshments, visit the small shop and support the women’s work.

We look ahead with confidence and enthusiasm and are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this special place a reality. Together, we continue to build opportunities for women, families and the wider community.
